Teaching yoga involves more than sequencing poses. It requires clarity, responsibility, and care that many teacher trainings don’t fully address.

Registered vs. Certified Yoga Instructor: What’s the Difference?

Becoming a yoga teacher involves both training and credentialing, and the terms “registered” and “certified” are often used interchangeably even though they mean different things. A certified yoga instructor has completed a yoga teacher training program and earned a certificate from their school.

A registered yoga instructor has taken the additional step of submitting that certificate to Yoga Alliance to become an RYT, which includes meeting their standards and maintaining continuing education. These two designations work together, but they are not the same. Please refer to the flow chart (best viewed in desktop) below OR click the button to read more in our full blog post on this topic.
